Your inbox pings. The subject line reads: Subject Access Request.
Cue dramatic music, a spotlight overhead, and maybe a faint scream in the distance. You panic!
Relax.
Yes, Subject Access Requests (or SARs) are formal requests under GDPR, allowing employees to access personal data you hold about them........(what....? Emails? meeting notes? internal messages?).
Sounds intense, doesn’t it?
But here’s the deal: SARs are often “requested as standard” during formal HR processes, such as disciplinaries, grievances, appeals, dismissals etc, to instill fear into an employer or to add pressure to a case.
They can feel like a power move.
But that doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong! And no, you don’t need to enter panic mode or start digging through your inbox in a cold sweat.
The answer, speak to us and let us know it has been received.
We know the script. We’ll support you with what needs to be shared, what can be redacted, what’s potentially exempt, and how to respond clearly and without drama.
The best thing you can do? The moment a SAR lands, is seek support and deal with it.
Because nothing ruins your workday like an arduous admin burden. But nothing empowers you more than handling one with confidence and clarity.
So next time you receive one, don’t spiral. Don’t overthink. Don’t go full Shakespearean tragedy.
Just talk to us!
Silver Star HR - we turn HR drama into clarity.
